(PHOTOS/AGENCIES)Senegal will be featuring in their 15th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament and their third in a row since 2015. They are arguably the best African side to never win an AFCON title. In the 2019 edition, Senegal is in Group C alongside Algeria, Kenya and Tanzania.Senegal did not enter into qualification for the first four AFCON tournaments between 1957-1963.Senegal’s maiden appearance at the finals was impressive as they negotiated through the 1965 Group A alongside leaders and hosts Tunisia. However, they would go on to lose 0-1 to Ivory Coast in the third place playoff game.In the next edition in Ethiopia, the Lions Teranga could not replicate the 1965 form, finishing third in Group B, behind Congo-Kinshasha and Ghana. For the next 15 years, Senegal would either not enter into qualification or failed to reach the finals.Their next participation at the finals was in Egypt 86 but it was short-lived as Senegal could not get past the group stages. Despite winning two of their three group games, the Lions of Teranga finished third in Group A, bowing out because of scoring one goal less than Ivory Coast. In 1988, Senegal once again failed to qualify for the AFCON finals in Morocco. Algeria 90 would however see Senegal replicate their best finish at the finals. After finishing second in Group B, Senegal lost 1-2 to Algeria in the semis, before losing 0-1 to Zambia in the third place playoff game. The next two editions (92&94), would see the Lions of Teranga get eliminated at the quarter-finals stage after making it through the respective groups. For 96 and 98 editions, Senegal would fail to qualify for the finals. Their next appearance came in AFCON 2000, where they lost to hosts Nigeria in the quarterfinals. With what is always termed as the ‘Golden Generation’ of Senegalese football, Senegal would produce their best ever finish at the finals, finishing as runners ups. With the likes of El Hadj Diouf, Pap Diop, Khalil Fadiga, Amdy Faye, Aliou Cisse and Tony Silva, Senegal topped Group D which contained Egypt, Tunisia and Zambia. They went on to beat DR Congo 2-0 and Nigeria in the quarters and semis respectively.Senegal then faced defending champions Cameroon in the final. After 120 minutes of no goals, Senegal missed three penalties in the shoot-out, losing 2-3 in the end.Senegal lost their only final to Cameroon in 2002.The 2002 heroics would not be replicated the following edition as the Lions of Teranga were eliminated by hosts Tunisia in an ill-tempered encounter.A fourth-placed finish in 2006 was then followed up with a Group stage elimination and then failing to reach the finals in 2008 and 2010 respectively.Senegal would then return to the finals of 2012 where they once again failed to make it past the groups. In 2013, Senegal failed to reach the finals of African football showpiece. The Lions of Teranga once again bounced back and made it to Equatorial Guinea 2015 where they were placed in group C alongside Ghana, Algeria and South Africa. In a group which also featured Tunisia, Algeria and Zimbabwe, the Lions of Teranga won two games and drew the other to finish in top spot.At the quarters is however where their journey would end. After a 0-0 draw in 120 minutes with Cameroon, Sadio Mane missed Senegal’s last spot kick in sudden death to see his side lose 4-5.CoachAliou CisseCissé, 43, is a Senegalese coach and former player who has been in charge of the Senegal Men’s national team since 2015.Cisse took over as Senegal head coach in 2015.Having begun his career in France, he later played for English clubs Birmingham City and Portsmouth. George Groves became European super-middleweight champion with a points victory against Christopher Rebrasse in their WBC world title eliminator at Wembley Arena.Groves, who has also held the British and Commonwealth titles, was short of his best in his first outing since being knocked out by Carl Froch in their rematch in May.Frenchman Rebrasse didn’t let his belt go without a battle, absorbing some heavy shots and at times troubling Groves as the Hammersmith man tired in the later rounds.Groves, 26, was nevertheless a clear winner and is now in line for a third world title shot following his two defeats against WBA and IBF champion Froch – the WBC title is currently held by unbeaten American Anthony Dirrell.Groves started at a frenetic pace and rocked Rebrasse in the third round, while the Londoner’s jab was a persistent and effective weapon. As the pace slowed, Rebrasse had more success, including during an explosive eighth round in which the pair traded heavy shots.Although his opponent, who has never been stopped, was durable and still strong in the closing rounds, Groves always had the edge in terms of hand speed and variety of shots. Two of the judges scored the bout 118-110 in his favour, with another making it 117-111.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebook

9 July 2009 The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is investing US$30-million (about R243-million) in South Africa’s Sasfin, enabling the financial services group to increase lending to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that often struggle to obtain funds from large commercial banks. The IFC’s investment will consist of up to $10-million in equity, a loan of $10-million, and up to $10-million in trade finance guarantees. The IFC’s investment will provide Sasfin with long-term capital, which has become increasingly expensive and scarce as many institutions cut back credit lines amid the global financial crisis. Sasfin will use the funds to increase the products it offers to smaller businesses, strengthen its environmental and social lending practices, and boost foreign trade by South African companies. The IFC will also support Sasfin as it expands operations across South Africa and potentially to other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, including Malawi, Botswana and Ghana. Creating jobs, boosting growth “IFC is committed to working with partners such as Sasfin to create more opportunities for South African businesses.” “An inclusive financial sector is crucial for developing a vibrant private sector that promotes economic development and helps reduce poverty,” said IFC Global Financial Markets director James Scriven. “The partnership with [the] IFC will strengthen Sasfin’s capital position during these volatile economic times and help expand lending to smaller businesses, an underserved segment of South African society,” Sasfin CEO Roland Sassoon said in an IFC statement this week. “Increased financing for small and medium enterprises is crucial for the sustainable development of South Africa’s private sector.” Increased lending, African expansion

A quick little experiment for you if you haven’t tried this before: Go to Google Maps and ask it for directions from San Francisco, CA to Beijing, China. Now, you wouldn’t imagine any other way than to hop on a plane, right? Instead, Google figures you’d like to drive, takes you to the beach and then, somewhere around step 32, advises you to make the 3,879 kayak trip across the Pacific Ocean. While the cross-Pacific directions are a perennial joke, they’re literally useless for travelers. Rome2Rio, a site built on top of the much-loved Google maps interface, offers up directions by plane, train and automobile rather than telling you to hoof it to the beach and get to paddling.Using the site is as simple as putting in a starting and ending point and clicking a button. From there, it will offer a medley of directions to get you from point A to B. It currently has flights from more than 670 airlines, trains in Europe, China and India and driving directions and ferries around the world. The site is launching today and, while it offers a number of flights for each trip, it doesn’t appear to have a simple on-site booking functionality, which is a bit of a shame. Nonetheless, it quickly nails down the basic part of directions, letting you handle the rest from there. At least it isn’t telling you to take a kayak, right? The most useful place for Rome2Rio, it would seem, will be where it has train schedules in addition to planes. Knowing the alternatives is always great when traveling and trains can be a great (and sometimes cheaper) alternative to zipping over the landmass in between two spots.Founders Michael Cameron and Bernie Tschirren explain the site a bit more in the following video and Cameron told us that Amtrak and Greyhound itineraries are in the plans for the future. If you have itchy feet like me, I’d bookmark this site and keep it in mind for future travels. The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology City-jumping, history-loving, smartphone-toting nerds are getting a fun new tool for Android and iOS today. Location discovery app It Happened Here has updated its catalogue today to bring rich information to users in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. It Happened Here shows users interesting factoids about locations close to them. Kicking it in Georgetown in D.C. and want to see the infamous stairs that Father Karras threw himself down at the end of The Exorcist? The app uses Google Maps and will show a pin with your location and a pin for the nearest events around you. Just follow the map on your phone and you will soon find yourself standing at the bottom of the steps of cinematic lore. With a degree in history and the natural curiosity of a journalist, I often times feel that I am not getting the most out of a city when I travel. I know there are supposed to be cool things around, but I am just not sure what they are. This is even more true since I live in the D.C. area, a region with its fair share of interesting history. Playing with It Happened Here I get a good snapshot of sites to visit based on where I am standing. The app is kind of like having a location-aware guidebook in your pocket. Legacy guidebooks like Frommer’s have iPhone apps but they are nowhere near as intuitive as It Happened Here or Plnnr. For instance, the Frommer’s app provides a tip calculator, currency converter and time translator but is not location-aware and the purpose of the app is to get users to download Frommer’s city guides from the app store.Plnnr is an interesting application in the location-discovery arena but, as the name suggests, it is more about planning a trip than learning the history around you. Plnnr is a tool that can help you create and track an itinerary to degrees of minutiae. That is the opposite of It Happened Here, which is probably better for more serendipitous discovery than for planning a trek around a city. One drawback of It Happened Here is that you have to purchase cities one at a time. The initial download is $2.99 with each additional city costing the same.
