first_imgJohannesburg, Tuesday 7 January 2014 – Brand South Africa congratulates the class of 2013 on their improved results and welcomes this as a positive contribution to the long terms development of South Africa.Brand South Africa CEO, Miller Matola said, “We congratulate the class of 2013 on their improved results as well as the teachers and parents who have played their part to support our learners to do best.  The improvement in the overall national pass rate and particularly in maths bodes well for the creation of a knowledge economy.  We are also pleased that the number of learners who will be able to enter university has increased.””“The National Development Plan clearly states that education, training and innovation are central to South Africa’s long-term development. They are core elements in alleviating poverty and reducing inequality.  Education enables each child to have an equal opportunity to do what they are best at.  The 2013 matric results indicate that South Africa is on the right trajectory to achieving this.”“As students, parents and teachers prepare for the 2014 academic year, we need to remember that it is the responsibility of parents and communities to play their part and support their children to ensure that they remain focused throughout the year. It is also the responsibility of teachers to inspire and assist students to do best at school and beyond.”“The ultimate responsibility of success lies with you, the learner.  It is vital that learners recognise that education provides the opportunity for them to discover their full potential.  Do not be afraid to set your own goals and aspire to meet each one!”Learners who did not succeeded in passing their matric examinations should not be discouraged, they should try again or register for the supplementary examinations. Remember the words of Nelson Mandela when he said, “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do,” concluded Matola.Note to editorsMinister Motshekga’s announcement of the 2013 matric results:http://www.education.gov.za/Newsroom/Speeches/tabid/298/ctl/Details/mid/2907/ItemID/3871/Default.aspxThe 2013 Matric Results can be accessed as follows:http://www.education.gov.za/MatricResults/ExamResults/tabid/175/Default.aspxAbout Brand South AfricaBrand South Africa is the official marketing agency of South Africa, with a mandate to build the country’s brand reputation, in order to improve its global competitiveness abroad. first_imgFacebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Related Posts sarah perez Details of the Data BreachThe attack on Gawker was orchestrated by a group calling itself Gnosis, which at first appeared to be affiliated with 4chan. The 4chan site is the Internet imageboard where memes like Rickrolling and lolcats were born, and more notably, where members of the hacking group Anonymous are known to congregate. Anonymous is the group behind the vigilante-style Web attacks on companies and organizations that refused to support Wikileaks, including payment processors like MasterCard, Visa and PayPal, to name a few. However, Gnosis claims to have no affiliation with either Anonymous or the 4chan board, according to the message text included in the password file dump posted online over the weekend. Tags:#NYT#security#twitter#web That said, the attack seems to be associated with a previous feud between Gawker and 4Chan, according to Mediaite, which exchanged email with an individual claiming to part of the Gnosis-led hack. The anonymous person told Mediaite it was “arrogance” from Gawker management and staff with regard to the hacker community that prompted the attack. Now victims of the attack – Gawker commenters – have had their emails and passwords shared publicly with anyone who cares to download them. Simply changing your password on Gawker blog sites is not enough. Most people tend to use the same username and password combination everywhere on the Web, meaning this hack gives the attackers, and now anyone else, access to Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts, webmail accounts, online banking accounts and anything else where that same username and password was used.Victims should change their passwords immediately on any site where that email and password have been used. Good Samaritans Warn VictimsAlthough Gawker itself hasn’t directly emailed its victims, an anonymous good samaritan and the “Team at Hint” have sent out emails warning of the breach. The good samaritan who only signed his name as “Steve” sent the following email on Sunday:You don’t know me.  I’m nobody.  My name is Steve.  I came across a database dump from Gawker.com earlier this evening.  It’s making its rounds around the internet.  Besides just the code dump from gawker.com among other sites, it also contains email addresses and passwords for over 1.3 million accounts.  I’m sending this email to the 200,000 or so people who’s passwords were included, in plain text, in this archive.  I have your password.  However, I have 0 interest in it.  Obviously i’m anonymous so how can you trust me – you can’t.  But trust me, if I had interest in your password, I wouldn’t be emailing you saying I have it. That’s just dumb.  The reason I’m telling you this is because people all over the world, who aren’t like me, who won’t notify you, have it.  They will use and abuse it.  Change your gawker.com credentials. Now.  MORE IMPORTANTLY, change passwords on other sites you visit that use the same one as your gawker.com/lifehacker.com/gizmodo.com login.Let me put it this way – my login credentials were on that list.  I’d want someone emailing me if I didn’t know better, which is why i’m doing this.Best of luck!Meanwhile, a second email from a stealthy startup called Hint send its own message:Hi there,Hint wanted to let you know that your email address and password that you used to signup for Gawker (or one of its sites) were hacked. Forbes’ coverage is here.In situations like this, time is of the essence, which is why we were surprised & shocked to find that Gawker Media hadn’t taken the initiative to notify you of this privacy breach immediately. We HIGHLY recommend you change all of your online passwords as a precaution.-The Team at Hint(This is a one time email) We’re not sure how we feel about Hint using the data breach as a marketing opportunity for its yet-to-launch service that only describes itself as “the place where opportunities and adventures find you.” But we imagine they were trying to do the right thing.Image credits: Sophos, Forbes The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Consider this a public service message: Hundreds of thousands of Twitter accounts have been compromised by hackers who are now using the victims’ accounts to tweet about the Acai Berry diet. The Twitter spam appears to be tied to this weekend’s attack on Gawker Media’s servers, home to popular weblogs like LifeHacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, io9, Jezebel, Kotaku and others.Because so many people use the same username and password combination for different Web services, the Twitter spammers were able to use the email addresses and passwords retrieved from Gawker’s servers to take control of the Twitter accounts in question. No doubt this is only the beginning of the ramifications associated with this major security breach. The Twitter spammers are not likely to be the same hackers as those who actually broke into Gawker Media’s Web servers. Instead, like most spammers, they’re opportunists.?Over the weekend, up to 1.3 million passwords were stolen off of Gawker’s servers by a hacker group called Gnosis and then publicly shared on torrent site The Pirate Bay, for anyone and everyone to download.?According to security firm Sophos, which spoke with Del Harvey, Twitter’s director of trust and safety, the spam messages about the Acai Berry diet appear to be posted from accounts where people were using the same username and password as they did on Gawker’s network. ?Clicking the spam links on Twitter will take you to a page where the diet solution is being sold. first_imgA quick little experiment for you if you haven’t tried this before: Go to Google Maps and ask it for directions from San Francisco, CA to Beijing, China. Now, you wouldn’t imagine any other way than to hop on a plane, right? Instead, Google figures you’d like to drive, takes you to the beach and then, somewhere around step 32, advises you to make the 3,879 kayak trip across the Pacific Ocean. While the cross-Pacific directions are a perennial joke, they’re literally useless for travelers. Rome2Rio, a site built on top of the much-loved Google maps interface, offers up directions by plane, train and automobile rather than telling you to hoof it to the beach and get to paddling.Using the site is as simple as putting in a starting and ending point and clicking a button. From there, it will offer a medley of directions to get you from point A to B. It currently has flights from more than 670 airlines, trains in Europe, China and India and driving directions and ferries around the world. The site is launching today and, while it offers a number of flights for each trip, it doesn’t appear to have a simple on-site booking functionality, which is a bit of a shame. Nonetheless, it quickly nails down the basic part of directions, letting you handle the rest from there. At least it isn’t telling you to take a kayak, right? The most useful place for Rome2Rio, it would seem, will be where it has train schedules in addition to planes. Knowing the alternatives is always great when traveling and trains can be a great (and sometimes cheaper) alternative to zipping over the landmass in between two spots.Founders Michael Cameron and Bernie Tschirren explain the site a bit more in the following video and Cameron told us that Amtrak and Greyhound itineraries are in the plans for the future. If you have itchy feet like me, I’d bookmark this site and keep it in mind for future travels. first_imgA recent article in The Atlantic magazine by Richard Florida, “How the Crash Will Reshape America,” has some very interesting observations about home ownership and the damage that our society has done to itself by creating artificial incentives for people to own homes. Home ownership has been subsidized in America for many years through mortgage-interest tax deductions and artificially low interest rates. These factors have distorted demand for homes, creating incentives for people to buy bigger (and more) homes than they need. This demand for increasingly larger homes has also distorted development patterns, leading to the creation of low-density suburbs instead of more sustainable, and denser, cities and towns. It also led to a boom in the home building industry, which, as most booms eventually do, has turned rapidly into a bust. The fictional “happy homeowner”While I accept that the recent disasters in the mortgage and financial markets are an aberration, we need to realize that not everyone should, or even necessarily want to, own a home of their own. A study from the Wharton School of Business quoted in the same article reports that homeowners are no happier, no more or less stressed, and have no higher self-esteem than renters. Another study shows that in both the U.S. and Europe, areas with higher rates of home ownership also have higher unemployment numbers. Homeowners are less mobile than renters, keeping them from accepting jobs in new locations. In our current dismal economic climate, this problem can lead to more foreclosures as residents are stuck living in homes where they cannot find work. Those that do find work will have longer commutes, reducing their quality of life, using more imported oil, and increasing pollution — none of which is a good thing.Don’t restart the building industry, reinvent itNew-home construction is in the tank, and the industry and government are tripping over each other trying to figure out how to reinvigorate it. To me this seems a myopic view of the problem. The entire industry is trying restart when it would be better off reinventing itself.Forget about building new homes, which will be difficult to sell anyway, and focus on both improving the homes we have and building new rental properties. All the homeowners who are losing their homes are going to need a place to live, so why not build it for them? Instead of providing financial incentives for first-time home buyers, let’s create a benefit program for builders and renovators of rental properties and their tenants. Along with that, create incentives to make both new and existing rental properties green. That will move us toward energy independence as well as reduce utility costs for these new renters.Insanity is not a good business planI know that this post will irritate builders, but the industry needs to take a long, hard look at itself and prepare for the future. All business is cyclical, but construction will take a very long time to recover, longer if it doesn’t change the way it does things. Let’s not forget Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.last_img read more

first_imgMartina Navratilova (left) proposes to her girlfriend Julia Lemigova at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.Tennis great Martina Navratilova proposed to her girlfriend on the big screen of Arthur Ashe Stadium between the US Open men’s semi-finals on Saturday.Navratilova popped the question to Julia Lemigova in the Tennis Channel suite, drawing a loud cheer from the crowd. “I was very nervous.”Navratilova said later, “It came off. She said yes. It was kind of an out-of-body experience. You’ve seen people propose at sporting events before, in movies, in real life. Here it was happening to me. It was like I was watching myself do it.”57-year-old Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, a mark she shares with Chris Evert. Serena Williams will try to match it in Sunday’s women’s final.Navratilova said somebody suggested she propose during a changeover in the first match between Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic, but she didn’t want to disturb the players in any way.The only problem was that Navratilova was later scheduled to play a Champions doubles match with Jana Novotna against Tracy Austin and Gigi Fernandez. She tried unsuccessfully to get the start postponed without telling anybody why, so she was fretting that the Nishikori-Djokovic match would go five sets. Fortunately, it ended in four. After the triumph in her personal life, Navratilova was also victorious in doubles.last_img read more

first_imgzoomIllustration. Image Courtesy: Pexels under CC0 Creative Commons license An anti-corruption project aiming for port calls without demands for in-kinds payments, harassment, or the threat of illicit delays has been completed in Nigeria with positive outcomes. Nigeria is one of the most challenging countries to do business in with unlawful demands commonplace, according to Danish Shipping. For the shipping industry there are numerous steps in the vessel clearance process which lead to inefficient operations and increase the opportunity for illegitimate demands in ports. As an example, an analysis carried out by the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network and United Nations Development Programme concluded that it can take more than 140 signatures to get a vessel or cargo cleared by the local authorities.“Unlawful demands put a huge risk on vessel crew and shipping companies. Cases of extortion, harassment and threats of violence are, unfortunately, not uncommon,” according to Danish Shipping.“It is of upmost importance for the shipping sector that trade and port calls are free from any illicit demands that cause iniquitous delays and stressful situations for the crew,” Maria Skipper Schwenn, Executive Director, Danish Shipping, said. The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network has been active in Nigeria for a number of years and has been able to push for improvements in ports processes. With funding from several donors the network has been able to develop a platform of tools to improve the port environment. These tools have been tested in Nigeria with positive feedback and have been further enhanced by an integrity training kit for port officials. A recent survey of shipping companies calling at ports in Nigeria has demonstrated that the anti-corruption project had a positive effect on the operating environment in the country. To date the project has supported the implementation of harmonized operational procedures in ports, the establishment of a grievance mechanism process, and has carried out an integrity training program for 1,000 stakeholders in Nigeria together with Martine Anti-Corruption Networks local partner.last_img read more

first_imgParis: Neymar scored a fine late winner as Paris Saint-Germain beat Lyon 1-0 to move three points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table. The Brazilian finally beat Anthony Lopes, who had pulled off numerous impressive saves, with three minutes of normal time on Sunday to play at the Groupama Stadium. It was Neymar’s second winning goal in as many league games since being reinstated to the team following a protracted transfer saga which saw him attempt to force through a return to Barcelona. He’s not at 100 percent capacity. “He is not at his limit. He can do better, he will do better. He’s going to get to his best level, with matches and decisive goals like that, it’s going to help him.” The Parisians sit top on 15 points after Angers and Nice both won over the weekend to temporarily join Tuchel’s side at the summit, and followed up their impressive midweek Champions League victory over Real Madrid with the win in constant drizzling rain in Lyon. Also Read – Djokovic to debut against Shapovalov at Shanghai MastersSylvinho’s Lyon remain in ninth place and are without a win since mid-August. PSG were without the attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Mauro Icardi due to injuries, while midfielder Marco Verratti started on the bench. The best of the early chances fell to Neymar on 22 minutes but his effort was superbly saved by Lopes. Neymar was denied again by another tidy Lopes stop four minutes before the break as the Portugal international tipped the Brazil forward’s dangerous free-kick over the bar. PSG’s domination from the first half carried over into the second 45 minutes. Abdou Diallo had the pick of the chances, using the wet conditions to glance a header from a Neymar corner over the crossbar. The world’s most expensive player was targeted by home fans when taking set-pieces from the left-hand side as they threw plastic bottles and rolled-up bin bags at him. With 87 minutes on the clock, substitute Verratti found Neymar in the box who dribbled into space and finally beat Lopes to the keeper’s left with a low shot. He celebrated by running towards the same corner of the ground where he had earlier been taunted by the Lyon supporters.last_img read more
