Volleyball Advances To MVC Tournament Semifinals


first_img Full Schedule Roster Live Stats Preview Next Game: Box Score (HTML) Print Friendly Version Box Score (PDF) center_img ESPN+ Watch Live Story Links SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Drake University volleyball team extended its season by grinding out a 3-2 win over Bradley in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament Thursday evening at Hammons Student Center.The Bulldogs were the final team to qualify for the six-team field and upended No. 3 seed Bradley by set scores of 25-15, 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 17-15.The victory was the Bulldogs’ first in the MVC Tournament since 1998. They advance to face the No. 2 seed, Illinois State, Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.Drake’s (21-13) senior hitters continued to do lead the offense as they have all year with Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.) battling through injury to match a career-high with 19 kills on 59 attempts. Cathryn Cheek (Coppell, Texas) added 12 kills and 22 digs along with seven blocks just hours after earning first-team All-MVC honors.Sophomore Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa) helped lift the Bulldogs with a career-high 12 kills on 29 attempts, three aces and two blocks in a match where the Bulldogs out-blocked the Braves 14-9. Gillian Gergen (Janesville, Iowa) led that blocking performance with a career-high 10 blocks.Kylee Macke (Ankeny, Iowa) had another strong showing defensively with 30 digs on a night where the Bulldogs recorded 110 digs.Bradley was eliminated from the tournament despite 23 kills from All-MVC first team selection Erica Haslag and 18 kills from the league’s Freshman of the Year, Hannah Thompson. After swapping the first four sets, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the fifth set behind two aces from Tubbs. Drake never trailed going forward, despite Bradley pulling within a point or trying the score eight times. Three kills from Schofield gave the Bulldogs match point at 14-11 and Drake needed every bit of that cushion as three-straight points from Bradley tied the match at 14-14. Finally, back-to-back kills from Natalie Fry (Allen, Texas) and Cheek gave the Bulldogs the two-point, 17-15, advantage to propel the Bulldogs into the semifinals of the MVC Tournament. vs. Illinois State 11/23/2018 – 5 p.m.last_img
